The publication shows the newly built Mas d’Enric penitentiary, by AiB arquitectes and estudi PSP arquitectura, that sparks a series of reflections on architecture’s role in the problematic subject of prison design.
The frame that focus the subject of this degree course about Theory at the School of Architecture of Barcelona (ETSAB, UPC) begins from the knowledge and critique of the theories and the architectural accomplishments more relevant developed from 1968 up to the current days. In an experimental way, the students with groups of three, have done a practical work that consists on having written a short entry about one piece of theory that will have to be upload in the portal of the wikipedia, following these categories: theory of the architecture, theorists, books of architecture, buildings.
Materiality and space are fundamental properties of architecture. Both the final materiality and the space created by it are a reflection of the cultural conditions in which architecture is framed. Because of this, understanding the relationship between these two elements allows us to comprehend and illuminate the values of contemporary society regarding the construction of its habitat.
The relationships of contiguity between houses and trees have been established since remote times. However, at the end of the nineteenth century those links became decisively explicit in the design process when the house emerged as one of the fundamental architectural programs, and as the result of an increasing sensibility towards environmental aspects and the landscape. In any case, trees have been deliberately connected with houses since they were incorporated as a distinguished part of the architectural project.
