Outstanding Built Environment Solutions Around Cycling

The Bicycle Architecture Biennale (BAB) is a prestigious showcase of cutting edge and high-profile building designs that are facilitating bicycle travel and transforming communities around the world.
It shows that cities that put cycling at the heart of urban design unlock massive social, economic and environmental benefits.

The BAB shows the work of international designers, from all corners of the globe. It shows that cities that put cycling at the heart of urban design unlock massive social, economic and environmental benefits. It was conceived by BYCS as a way to inspire people around the world to imagine new possibilities for human-centric cities. BYCS is a social enterprise that works internationally to accelerate cycling progress and is driven by a mission called 50by30: 50% of all city trips by bike by 2030.

For this second BAB, the selection of the projects was overseen by NEXT architects, an award-winning, international firm with offices in Amsterdam and Beijing. The exhibition is comprised of curated projects, along with – for the first time – projects chosen from an open application. We invite you to explore all projects, which are organized by three themes – Routes, Connections and Destinations. These themes help us to see the variety of ways that cycling transforms people and places, and that creating livable cities is about finding a balance between moving and staying.

In this exhibition, we also present four additional, complementary designs; research-led designs selected by the Dutch Board of Government Advisors from their project ‘Dutch designs for Cycling Country’. In this project, design thinking is applied to a number of specific issues in the four largest cities of the Netherlands; Amsterdam, Utrecht, the Hague and Rotterdam.

The BAB launched in June in Amsterdam and is now touring internationally.
Cities or organizations that wish to stage the BAB in its two year run are encouraged to contact
BYCS before it books up. Every country, city, or neighborhood has the potential to become a success story through cycling. With this biennale, we hope to provide the inspiration to make that happen.
