Flying Vegetation: Bringing Agriculture Back into the Vietnamese City

H&P Architects

Flying Vegetation explores Agritecture, an approach that brings architecture and agriculture together to imagine new forms of habitation in response to climate change and rapid urbanization. In Vietnam, the expansion of cities has progressively reduced agricultural land, disrupting traditional farming practices and placing pressure on rural communities. The project responds to this transformation by bringing elements of agricultural life into the urban home.

Located in a newly developed area of Thai Binh City, the house faces a communal neighbourhood garden. This relationship with the surrounding greenery inspired a layered façade composed of suspended plants. The vegetation acts as a filter between the home and the street, providing privacy while reducing dust and noise. At the same time, its openness maintains visual and environmental connections with the garden beyond. Suspended above the façade, the planting system appears to float, dissolving the distinction between building and landscape.

The building combines private and shared uses. The first three floors accommodate the owners, while the upper two floors are rented out. Rather than treating these areas as completely separate, the house encourages a shared way of living. A multifunctional space on the third floor and the roof provide common areas where residents can meet and interact.

Gardening is central to this domestic environment. Trees and soil are understood not only as resources for growing food but also as fundamental materials connected to traditional craft and construction. They become a common language through which different inhabitants can connect with one another.

Plants are suspended along the front and rear façades in vertical sequences. A flexible structural frame allows individual pots to be accessed for maintenance and replacement, while their staggered arrangement provides the plants with adequate space and light. The resulting façades transform the house into a vertical garden that is constantly changing with the growth of its vegetation.

Beyond its architectural qualities, the project proposes a different relationship between urban living and food production. Residents can cultivate vegetables, care for plants, and share their harvest with neighbours, turning everyday domestic routines into opportunities for social interaction and reconnection with nature.

Flying Vegetation therefore suggests that agriculture does not necessarily need to disappear as cities expand. Instead, it can be integrated into the domestic environment. Through the repetition of this model, the project imagines a future of “fields inside the city”, where productive landscapes become part of urban homes and contribute to greener, more connected communities.
