Set in the village of Tvaladi, this recently completed private residence by NS STUDIO integrates traditional materials with contemporary architectural language. The one-storey dwelling, built from stone and wood, anchors itself in the local landscape while embracing modern openness through expansive glazing and minimalist forms.
The architectural concept revolves around a seamless synthesis of past and present. A modern volume is grounded with a stone façade, evoking the material legacy of the region. The combined use of stone and wood flows from exterior to interior, ensuring continuity and a deep connection with place. The home’s material palette centers on natural elements—primarily stone and wood—selected for their warmth, texture, and resonance with the surrounding environment. Generous openings in the façade invite daylight and landscape views into the living spaces, reinforcing the home’s dialogue with its setting.
Inside, the design juxtaposes raw and refined surfaces. The tactile variety of finishes—from coarse stone to finely detailed joinery—creates a layered spatial experience. The overall interior remains cohesive while offering subtle tonal shifts and material contrasts. Furnishings reflect the architectural ethos, favoring wood and natural fibers in understated forms. The lighting scheme enhances material depth, using indirect, ambient sources to cultivate a serene and intimate environment.
A secondary structure—a cellar—sits perpendicular to the main house, extending the architectural dialogue across the site. Sharing the same design vocabulary, it contributes both functionally and compositionally, reinforcing a sense of unity and balance. The House in Tvaladi embodies an architecture rooted in context, material honesty, and spatial clarity. It articulates a balanced relationship between built form and natural surroundings, tradition and modernity.
