Rethinking the Right to Own

In this conversation, Ioanna Piniara proposes a post-neoliberal housing imaginary grounded in new relationships between architecture, policy, governance, and community. Their proposal operates across three levels–juridical framework, urban strategy, and architectural project–using the community land trust as a model for separating ownership from use rights and expanding collective spatial capacity. By incorporating time, federated governance, communal spaces, and resident participation, the approach seeks to move beyond property barriers and rethink privacy as a form of freedom. The resulting manual offers not a single design solution, but a methodology for developing meaningful housing arrangements adapted to specific communities.

Key Takeaways

  • Separate ownership from use rights to expand collective control over housing.
  • Shift housing governance from state-market partnerships toward empowered communities and local authorities.
  • Use time and flexible frameworks to accommodate changing needs and forms of domesticity.
  • Institutionalize communal spaces to rethink privacy beyond socioeconomic hierarchies.
  • Treat design as an open methodology shaped by each community’s needs.
