Course 02: BEP – Building Execution Plan

The BIM Force

In this segment, Ignasi Pérez Arnal explores the American approach to developing a BIM Execution Plan (BEP), focusing on its initial components—general vision, project information, and key contacts. He explains how each element contributes to defining objectives, responsibilities, and collaboration frameworks from the very start of a project. Pérez Arnal emphasizes the importance of clearly identifying all agents involved—from architects and engineers to BIM managers and analysts—and assessing their BIM expertise to ensure coherent coordination. This systematic approach ensures that every participant, role, and decision is aligned to support a transparent and efficient BIM process.

Key Takeaways:

  • The American BEP model structures information through clear, modular components.

  • A strong project vision aligns all participants around shared objectives and scope.

  • Identifying roles and contact details establishes accountability across the BIM process.

  • Evaluating BIM expertise helps ensure skill alignment and project quality.

  • Clear documentation of participants enables smoother collaboration and communication.

English transcript:
Now we’re going to go into detail about the American BEP model and see the general data — those sections we saw before — and how we’re going to fill them out in a very simple way. Let’s move on to the first detail. The first detail is the general vision we have of the BEP, and we should explain why we’re creating this BEP, in order to define the general objectives from the ownership itself on how to ground the execution of this BEP model.

Then we move on to the project information, and the project information is as simple as the data we include in the report of any other project — where we have the information with the dates, the deliverables, and the general data that will govern the BEP model.

Then, as we move forward, we get to the third section — the key contacts. Here, it’s something as simple as identifying who the architect is, the engineer, the surveyor, the structural and sustainability consultants, the contractors — all the people who will participate, these people or agents who will take part in the project and in what capacity. Are they Project Manager, BIM Manager, BIM Modeler, BIM Analyst, etc.?

We’ll start listing their information: which organization they come from, their contact name, their responsibility, email, phone number, and finally — and this is the most important part and I strongly recommend you do this well — we’ll check what BIM training they have.

If they don’t have any BIM knowledge, the first thing you should tell them is to take this course — of course — but more importantly, we’ll determine how to evaluate their BIM knowledge. Normally, the American model uses a scale from 1 to 3 — doesn’t know, knows, or is an expert — and this is a way to understand each of these agents’ ability to help and support us within our project.

And that’s where this part ends — now we move on to the next chapter.
