The series of proposed interventions are not meant to be obvious. The general aim is not to impose a new appearance, but to reveal the existing building in a new light through articulations, spatial arrangements and new paths provided discreetly by the interventions.
The importance of the new elements is not their appearance but their performance – what they are capable of promoting, their effectiveness in dynamizing and enhancing the virtues of the preexisting building and grounds.
The first action plan focuses on an intervention to recover the physical integrity and rehabilitation/modernization of the existing building, as well as the creation of a new, integrated complementary sector containing most of the services and areas necessary for the full functioning of a contemporary museum.
We conceived this expansion not as an annex or appendix, but as an underground extension of the pre-existing building which, in turn, opens up the possibility of connecting the museum to the park in a more powerful way, while generating a new entrance esplanade that extends all the way to the rua dos Patriotas.
