The proposal reflects the desire to create a new facility around the existing football field in a club with deep roots in the Canal district of Molins de Rei. The idea was, in addition to the existing facility, to include other sports such as weightlifting, judo, climbing and artistic gymnastics.
The momentum of the new facility is used to improve the overall urban setting. The premises were very isolated because of the old fence around the perimeter, as well as the poor relationship between the neighbourhood and the adjacent park. On another scale, it hindered the interaction with the free spaces that connect with the river where the B-23 motorway bisects the municipality.
The materials were chosen for durability and low maintenance, so they convey a kind of industrial feel that fits in well with the neighbourhood’s historical and urban context. However, the project’s commitment to quality included providing natural light and ventilation in all the rooms to offer users comfort and promote energy savings in the facilities.
The budgetary austerity at the beginning of the project (2012) necessitated a long-term response. A master plan was defined that foresaw the facility’s growth in phases, as resources became available to execute them. It was finally carried out in three sets of projects awarded via tenders, which were completed in 2014, 2016 and 2020.
