Creating NEBourhoods together is one of six Lighthouse Demonstrators launched in 2022 with European Union funding under the New European Bauhaus initiative. Across ten projects in Munich, the program tests neighbourhood-scale interventions that address questions of sustainability, inclusion, and present and future urban challenges. Each action takes the form of a design prototype focused on a specific theme: intergenerational public space, the upgrading of residential buildings, circular approaches to the existing building stock, design for non-human actors, regenerative energy communities, local mobility, and sustainable food systems.
By translating the New European Bauhaus principles “sustainable, beautiful, together” into practice, the projects produce both replicable tools and a critical understanding of the obstacles that emerge in the process of implementation. This handbook gathers those methods, insights, and lessons. It seeks to support small-scale neighbourhood initiatives while opening a broader reflection on the conditions still limiting sustainable and co-designed urban transformation.
