In 2021, the ninth year of the Landscape Festival took place in the town of Krnov. The goal of the festival is to highlight the importance of well-designed public space and urban greenery through installations, exhibitions, debates, and happenings. Therefore, we designed a simple intervention for public space that would demonstrate easy options for maximizing the area’s potential.
Our proposal focused on the skatepark area. Due to the popularity of the place, there is an evident need for spots where people can relax. The first step was to remove the fence surrounding the area. Demolition of the fence immediately created a more accessible and safe area, while supporting the inclusion of the different social segments and various other sports activities. Opening the skatepark brought new opportunities for leisure and urban furniture placement.
To build the project, we recycled 2,500 old beverage crates that were donated by the local company Kofola. We used them as a repeating module to create urban furniture, which included a shaded podium, a picnic table near the grill, a pyramid with views, and a wooden mini ramp.
The functions of the installations were determined based on a user needs analysis. Local young people volunteered to help with the construction process, which created a strong connection between them and the proposed elements. The effects of the intervention gave us valuable information for our next project: the revitalization of the larger area around the skatepark and running track.
