Dornbirn Houses

Dornbirn Houses by Katharina Fitz

The photographs were taken in my home town Dornbirn in Austria. In small cities such as Dornbirn, the house and garden are important for integration and acceptance within the neighbourhood. In contrast to the anonymous architecture of the city, the civic architecture is characterized by an open and inviting appearance.

After years of living in various cities I am especially fascinated by the bourgeois mentality of the inhabitants of a small town, which is reflected in the outer facades and the design of the garden. The garden of the inhabitants in the so called “Ländle” (little country) is an important status symbol, comparable to that of the car.
