The Form of the Possibility by Peter Ortner
When the construction of Novi-Belgrade started in the 1950s, no one was able to foresee the outcome of this urban and architectural experiment. But over the years, this new part of Belgrade has ended up as a playground for new concepts in mass housing and community buildings. More than 70 completely different housing areas, called blocks, were designed by different architects. They present a kaleidoscopic vision of unexpected urban forms. However, it is not strictly socialist or brutalist architecture; it is a melange of Western and Eastern formal languages. Even aspects of Japanese tradition can be seen. This modernism-in-between reveals the form of possibility: the possibility of creating always new and unexpected urban spaces – a far cry from homogenous monotony.
