City on the Move Institute / VEDECOM (IVM) seeks to draw attention to the crucial importance of the quality of the spaces of mobility. Spaces of intermodality and of transit (stations, hubs of interchanges) and flows (street sharing) prompt the establishment of new urban places and new mobility practices that combine information and the use of different modes to suit the circumstances, the timescales of the city, and the reasons for travel.
With the launch of the international and multi-partner “Passages, Transitional Spaces for the 21st-Century City” programme, aimed at professionals and the general public alike, City on the Move Insitute has been emphasising the role of passages as essential links in our journeys around the city. Since may 2013, a network of international experts has been working together to develop research and scientific, cultural and artistic events and to launch competitions in architecture, design, shorts movies… Given that passages have always been present in our cities in different forms, why today in particular? How do we do full justice to these essential and yet often neglected connections?
IVM’s international programme: Some 40 partners in over 20 countries, 11 architecture and urban design competitions attracting 1000 entrants, 750 students in 12 workshops, 5 short films made in Africa, 20 public events and conferences, 1 international touring exhibition and 6 local exhibitions, 6 documentaries, 1 catalogue of the exhibition, and 6 books.
