FAD, Fostering Arts and Design (1903) is a private, independent and not-for-profit association that has the objective of promoting design and architecture in the country’s cultural and economic life. FAD creates Materfad, materials centre of Barcelona, in 2008 as an answer to the demand from the country’s different professional and business sectors.
Materfad is a materials centre that resulted from the increasing role played by materials in the development of our society. The purpose of Materfad is to provide consultancy and training services to businesses, professionals, technology centres and universities. With this idea Materfad supplies the necessary information and advice on associated materials and technology in order to make innovative projects a reality. Materfad is a space for research, dissemination, documentation and activism in the field of materials and technology, with particular focus on any that present a novelty feature. It is currently the only transversal directory of materials and innovative technologies in the nation and the biggest materials library in the Spanish-speaking countries. All families of materials are represented in Materfad’s showroom (more than 4.000 references) and online free data base.
Materfad facilitates technological transfer between widely different sectors such as biotechnology, construction, transport or textiles. This surveillance task generates exhaustive knowledge of a variety of new materials and allows for the detection of technologies used in specific sectors with potential applications in other fields; this knowledge is also offered to a larger public through travelling exhibitions and associated workshops.
Materfad is present in Latin America with 4 affiliated centers: Mexico (Aguascalientes and Guadalajara), Chile (Valparaíso) and Colombia (Medellín). The cooperation between the members of this network is based on the exchange of knowledge. Each Materfad affiliate center is a dynamic platform of materials that powers knowledge permanently.
In 2017, FAD/Materfad have reached an agreement with Elisava, Barcelona School of Design and Engineering. Both parts prioritize that Materfad continues to be a specialized center available to all of you (institutions, companies, schools, universities and technological centres, both national and international) offering better services under the same conditions.
