The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) is a center for research, education, production and outreach, with the mission of envisioning the future habitat of our society and building it in the present. IAAC follows the digital revolution at all scales (from bits to geography, from micro-controllers to cities, from materials to the territory) to expand the boundaries of architecture and design and meet contemporary challenges. It is a specialized think-tank for innovative strategies within the fields of urban planning and urban design, characterized by local high quality and innovation-oriented research connected to an international network of excellence in technology and architecture.
IAAC, beyond its educational and pro-research work, is an interdisciplinary and multicultural community that engages in permanent collaborations with several cities, industrial groups, and research centers such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the City Council of Barcelona, the Southern California Institute of Architecture (Sci-Arc) and CISCO. With the Fab Lab Barcelona, the first and most advanced digital production laboratory in EU, the Green Fab Lab, the first digital fabrication laboratory oriented to self sufficiency, and the Advanced Architecture contest book series – Self-Sufficient Housing (2006), Self-Fab House (2010), The Self-Sufficient City (2010), City Sense (2013), Self-Sufficient Habitat (in press)- IAAC is now a worldwide reference for education and research in digital fabrication and self-sufficiency.
